As part of the IKEA Loyalty Membership Program project, we created a design fiction video to explore a series of “what if” scenarios.
We explored bold ideas, such as imagining consequences for unsustainable actions or visualizing a lost sustainable future to provoke reflection on everyday habits like throwing things away. Given the limited project timeframe, I strategically suggested presenting our initial concept as a design fiction to gather feedback while keeping the narrative open-ended and exploratory.
I quickly sketched a storyboard by hand to communicate our initial concept and highlight key touchpoints. It helped align the team and guide our discussion around the user experience.
Although the video was a sketch rather than a full prototype, our initial idea dealt with systemic change and the nature of complexity, so it required careful explanation. I spent time refining the edit to make it easy to understand—using subtitles, contextual music, and quick sketch visuals or interactions to guide the viewer. Most importantly, while keeping it fast!
Watch our video exploring how our initial idea of circular rewards system could make societal change.
As a group of designers, we often aim to make ideas perfect. But especially a sketch like this needs to remain open and thought provoking. It was important for us to remind ourselves that it is okay for things to be unfinished—and to keep moving forward.
I asked people outside the team to watch the video and give feedback on whether the concept was clear. Based on their input, I made quick iterations and improved the quality in a short amount of time.
